Read on to learn why this winery stands out as one of our guests’ favourites on our Naramata Bench wine tours.

A Family Story Rooted in Adventure

The story of Four Shadows is deeply intertwined with the Borren family’s journey from Holland to Canada. Wilbert and Joka Borren, driven by their adventurous spirits, initially established a successful pig farm in Lacombe, Alberta. However, a family vacation to the Okanagan Valley ignited their dream of vineyard ownership. In 2011, they purchased a 17-acre property in Penticton, BC, and embarked on a new chapter of their lives.

The name “Four Shadows” is a heartfelt tribute to their four sons, inspired by a photograph taken during a family vacation in Mexico. Although their sons are now pursuing their own dreams, they remain integral to the winery, contributing to everything from vineyard work to renovating the tasting room.

The Essence of Four Shadows: Wines That Welcome and Delight

At Four Shadows, the Borrens are committed to creating wines that are both approachable and complex. Their signature Classic Riesling is a perfect example. Loved by both novice wine drinkers and seasoned enthusiasts, this Riesling is easy to drink yet offers layers of complexity for those who choose to savor it. The Classic Riesling has garnered accolades, including a spot in the top 12 wines of the Naramata Bench and recognition as one of the top 50 wines in all of British Columbia.

In addition to Riesling, Four Shadows produces a variety of other wines, including a light, summery Zweigelt and a richly awarded 2020 Merlot. The focus remains on crafting wines that people can enjoy with friends and family, fostering special moments and memories.

The Winemaking Journey: Passion Meets Expertise

Wilbert Borren’s path to winemaking was marked by mentorship and collaboration. Early support from Lyndsay O’Rourke of Tightrope Winery helped shape the inaugural vintage in 2017, guiding decisions on barrel selection and fermentation. Today, Four Shadows continues to benefit from the expertise of consultant Pascal Madevon, ensuring that each wine is crafted to perfection.

The unique terroir of Four Shadows plays a significant role in the quality of its wines. The vineyard’s west-facing slope captures the warm evening sun, providing ideal conditions for grape ripening. This, combined with meticulous viticulture practices, results in exceptional wines that reflect the character of the Naramata Bench.

Personal Insights: The Heart and Soul of Winemaking

For Wilbert, the favorite part of the winemaking process is the solitude it offers. With music on and the cellar to himself, he finds peace and joy in crafting wines, a testament to his dedication and passion.

When it comes to wine and food pairings, Four Shadows’ Tasting Room Manager Lindsay brings a touch of fun and informality. She recommends trying sparkling Riesling with salt and vinegar potato chips for a delightful contrast. For a more sophisticated pairing, the Classic Riesling goes beautifully with spicy, creamy Thai food, particularly a coconut-based Thai green curry.
