Located just south of Okanagan Falls in the stunning South Okanagan, Stag’s Hollow Winery is a beacon of innovation and tradition in British Columbia’s wine industry. Known for its pioneering spirit and commitment to sustainability, Stag’s Hollow has established itself as a distinguished winery, producing some of the region’s most celebrated wines.

The Story Behind the Name

Stag’s Hollow Winery was born from the vision of Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger, who transitioned from successful city careers to become early pioneers in the Okanagan wine scene. Their journey began in 1991 when they sought out the perfect vineyard location. By 1992, they had purchased a four-hectare vineyard planted with Chasselas and Vidal grapes.

The name “Stag’s Hollow” was inspired by a serendipitous encounter with a fawn in the vineyard and the notable natural feature on their property: a dramatic kettle hole, or “hollow.” This unique formation plays a crucial role in the vineyard’s microclimate and contributes to the distinctive character of their wines.

A Legacy of Innovation

Stag’s Hollow Winery has always been at the forefront of winemaking advancements in the Okanagan. In 1995, they became the first winery in the region to implement energy-saving geothermal technology for heating and cooling. This commitment to innovation continued with the planting of Tempranillo in 2006, Dolcetto and Teroldego in 2011, and the expansion of their vineyards to include the Shuttleworth Creek and Maple Vineyard properties.

In 2019, Eric Liu purchased the winery, continuing the legacy of quality and sustainability that Larry and Linda established. The new Maple Vineyard acquisition promises even more diversity in grape varieties, including Riesling and additional Chardonnay plantings.

The Art of Winemaking

Winemaking Style

Stag’s Hollow’s winemaking approach embraces vintage variation and a minimalist philosophy. The winery focuses on producing elegant, balanced wines that highlight the true essence of each varietal. The winemaking team is committed to showcasing the fruit, using minimal oak and intervention to let the grapes shine.

This dedication to quality results in wines that are both approachable and age-worthy, reflecting the unique terroir of the Okanagan Falls sub-geographical indication (sub-GI).

Wines That Stand Out

Stag’s Hollow takes pride in its willingness to experiment and innovate. This spirit is exemplified by their Dolcetto and Albariño wines, which though unique to the region thrive in the local climate. Additionally, their five canned wine options showcase their adaptability and success in the ever-evolving wine industry.

The winery eagerly anticipates the release of the 2022 reds, a vintage that saw a significant increase in fruit yield and promises exceptional quality, especially the Pinot Noirs.

Meet the Winemaker

One of the unique aspects of Stag’s Hollow is its talented winemaker, Keira LeFranc, who boasts deep local roots in the Okanagan Valley. Growing up in Penticton, Keira discovered a passion for winemaking through a blend of science and art. Her journey included obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree and a CMS Certified Sommelier certification before returning to Stag’s Hollow.

After further studies in Wine Science in New Zealand, Keira took on the role of head winemaker in 2018. Under her guidance, the winery continues to produce exceptional wines while remaining true to the traditions and innovations that define Stag’s Hollow.
